5 Silent Signs Your Home Has a Hidden Termite Infestation
They are known as the "Silent Destroyers." Subterranean termites cause billions of rupees in structural damage every year across India. Unlike cockroaches or mosquitoes that are highly visible, termites live underground and inside your walls, eating your expensive wooden furniture, door frames, and structural supports from the inside out.
By the time most homeowners actually see a termite, massive damage has already been done. To protect your property, you must learn to identify the early, silent warning signs of an infestation. If you notice any of these 5 signs, you need to contact TrustXcare immediately.
1. Mud Tubes on Walls and Foundations
This is the most definitive sign of a subterranean termite infestation. Termites require a highly moist, dark environment to survive. They cannot be exposed to open air or sunlight, so they build enclosed "mud tubes" (looking like thin lines of dried dirt) to travel safely from the soil into your home.
- Where to look: Check the exterior foundation of your home, basement walls, inside plumbing shafts, and along the edges of skirting boards.
- The Test: If you break a piece of the mud tube and see tiny, pale-white insects scurrying inside, you have an active infestation.
2. Hollow-Sounding Wood
Termites consume wood from the inside, leaving the outer layer of paint or veneer completely intact. Your expensive solid-wood door frame might look perfect on the outside but could be completely hollowed out on the inside.
- Where to look: Wooden door frames (especially in bathrooms where there is moisture), wooden almirahs touching walls, and wooden skirting boards.
- The Test: Tap on the wood with the handle of a screwdriver. If it sounds papery or hollow instead of solid, it’s a major red flag.
3. Discarded Wings (Swarmers)
During the monsoon season or high humidity periods, mature termite colonies send out winged "swarmers" (Alates) to mate and start new colonies. After they find a mate and a place to nest, they twist off their wings.
- Where to look: You will often find piles of identical, translucent wings on windowsills, near doors, or trapped in spider webs.
- Note: Don't confuse them with flying ants. Termite wings are all the same size, whereas flying ants have larger front wings and smaller back wings.
4. Bubbling or Peeling Paint
This sign is often mistaken for simple water damage or dampness (seepage). When termites consume the drywall or wood behind your paint, they introduce moisture. This causes the paint on the surface to bubble, peel, or look like it has water damage.
- Where to look: Walls adjacent to bathrooms, near plumbing leaks, or behind wooden wall panels.
5. Frass (Termite Droppings)
Drywood termites (which are less common than subterranean but still present) nest directly inside the wood and push their fecal pellets out of tiny kick-out holes to keep their tunnels clean.
- Where to look: Look for small piles of what looks like sawdust, coffee grounds, or sand gathering beneath wooden furniture, cabinets, or window frames.
What to Do If You Spot These Signs
Do NOT spray the area with regular bug spray (like Hit or Baygon). Doing so will only kill a few surface workers, causing the colony to retreat deeper into your walls and emerge somewhere else. You cannot fix a termite problem yourself.
